September - The beginning of potty training

We have been taking a very casual approach to potty training.  You understand the concept of peeing in the potty and will do it if asked, but never initiate it if you're wearing a diaper.  So far if we are going to be at home for a few hours, we'll let you run around nude and will remind you every so often to go potty.  You've only had a couple accidents so you're getting the concept down although we're not sure you're ready to go full steam yet.
On this day it was a little chilly so we put some of Daddy's socks on you to keep your legs warm.

September - Running in the Sprinklers

After church this day we went on a walk with you and the puppies.  You saw the sprinklers on across the street, and it was game over.  We couldn't stop you from running through them.  We couldn't blame you either!  It was a hot summer day and those sprinklers felt nice and cool.

You played in them for about 20 minutes before you abruptly moved out of the way and said, "Brr!! Nennett cold!"  You were dripping wet!

August/September - Vegas Trip

For our 7th anniversary we went to Vegas (lucky sevens. . .I thought it was too clever to pass up).  We took you, the pups, and Ayisha with us.  We rented a house with a pool, which was good because it was HOT!  It was just a short weekend trip but it was fun.

Eating your first Oreo.  Loooooved it.

You always make the funniest hand motions when you talk.

Poor Isha.  Slaves away as a nanny whenever we go on vacation together.  This was toward the end of your sleep problems.  You woke up early from a nap, then was so exhausted that you fell asleep in her arms.

Watching the Gold man perform.

Seeing the flamingos at The Flamingo hotel.

Walking through the hotels.

The Conservatory at the Bellagio.

Biggest chocolate fountain in the US or something.

Night water show at the Bellagio.

August - Playdate

Just chillin' with your friend Alden, watching some Dinosaur Train.  Alden is 4 weeks younger than you.  We do weekly trades.  You go to their house on Tuesday mornings and Alden comes here on Wednesday mornings.  It's been great having a regular playdate again.  We stopped watching Ellie 5 months ago when her mom had another baby, and it's good for you to practice how to interact with other kids.

August - Sleep Problems

When we got back from New York, you had a really hard time sleeping for a few weeks.  You would scream when we put you in your crib, it would take forever for you to fall asleep, you'd wake up during the night, or you'd wake up early. . .more often than not some combinations of all the above items.  It was exhausting.  I would often have to hold you until you fell asleep, then lay you down.

On this particular day you woke up way too early from your nap, but were still so tired that you fell asleep on me even after I brought you downstairs!  That never happens!  The pups were more than willing to cuddle up and nap too.  They can't resist that body heat.  I was afraid that you would fall off the couch, but I was more afraid of waking you up if I tried to move you, so I spent the whole nap with a hand on your back in case you fell.  By the way, this is the Lightning McQueen blankie I made you after you fell in love with the movie Cars!  You love your blankie.
One of the things we tried doing in order to get you back to sleeping normal was to put your mattress on the floor.  We thought maybe the novelty of sleeping on the floor would appeal to you and make you more willing to lay down.  Plus you had started to complain about "alligators" when it was sleeptime so the only thing we could think of was that maybe you were having nightmares and that made you scared of your crib.  So maybe sleeping outside of your crib would shake up the scenery enough that you wouldn't have that association with sleep anymore.  Since you still roll around a lot in your sleep we stuck your mattress in the corner of the room and barricaded the open side.

The mattress thing worked somewhat okay - you didn't mention alligators anymore, but you also didn't want to stay put when we left the room.  So we had to sit there until you fell asleep, which could take nearly an hour because you would keep trying to talk to us.  Also at least half the time you'd wake up in the night and would hop out of bed and come looking for us.  So after only a week of that I decided enough was ENOUGH.  I completely rearranged your room and took down all the nursery decorations so that hopefully it would seem like a completely different room to you.  With your crib on a different side of the room than before I was hoping you wouldn't associate it with your previous nightmare problems.  We did spend another week retraining you to fall asleep on your own, and by the end of the week things were really looking up!  You would still complain when we put you down but would give up and go to sleep after just a couple minutes, and were sleeping through the night and through your naps again.  Then at the end of the week I was in the middle of writing a post during naptime about how your sleep problems were finally over. . .when I heard your door close and a little voice say "hi mama!"  You had figured out how to climb out of your crib!  ARGH!!  The sleep problems begin anew!

We bought a racecar toddler bed off of KSL figuring that if you could climb out of your crib, there was no point anymore.  You LOVED it, but we had the same problems as when it was just the mattress on the floor.  You wouldn't stay put.  So after a week of that, I took the bottom of the crib out so that the mattress rested right on the floor with the crib walls around it - so the mattress part was several inches lower than before.  Now you for sure couldn't climb out!  We stuck you back in the crib.  You weren't happy about not being able to sleep in the car bed but we stuck to our guns and just a couple short days later peace was restored.  And finally, FINALLY, after a long 6 weeks, we were back to normal!

Let's Try Something Different. Also, don't share my pics.

Over the past year I've really moved away from blogging because I've been more focused on doing pages in Bennett's baby book instead.  I'm going to try something different this year (2-3years.)  I'm going to try to blog EVERYTHING, and then at the end of the year pay for one of those services that turns your blog into a book.  If I hate it, I'll go back to doing it the other way.  But this way all of you loyal followers (you know. . . all 3 of you) can be kept updated without having to wait until the end of each year when I get his books published.

Also as a plea:  Please do not publicly share photos of Bennett without my permission.  I have been having some problems with that lately and if it continues I will no longer put pictures of Bennett on Facebook or on my main public blog.  I try really hard to have control over Bennett's "online presence" and am just trying to keep him safe by keeping tabs on who is able to see pictures of him.  This blog will likely become private at some point so let me know if you want a blog invite.  So far I've only told a couple people about this blog so I think I know everyone who sees this - but if I ever feel like people I don't know are starting to check this blog (friends of family, etc) then I will make it private.  This blog is meant to be a personal journal of sorts for him and those closest to him.

Thank you!

2 years, 3 months

Stubborn and independent as ever!
  • You're beginning to use possessive words like "mine" and "I" in your speech.  Just little phrases so far, like "where mine binky?" or "I see it!"  You still refer to yourself ("nennett") in the third person plenty.
  • You are starting to show a preference in clothing.  You often ask for your shoes with the blinking lights instead of whatever else I'm trying to put on you, and you love your tiger sweatshirt and monster shirt. . .to the point that you don't want me to take them off sometimes!
  • We've finally got bedtime back under control.  There was about 6 weeks there (including New York) where you weren't sleeping through the night, or would have a really hard time going down, or waking up way too early.  We tried a cool toddler race car bed for a while but you wouldn't stay in it.  So you're sleeping in your crib again, although we had to take out the screws so that the bottom could sit flat on the floor so that you couldn't climb out.  Now you're going to bed on your own and sleeping through the night again, thank goodness!  I can't complain too much because for most of your life you've been a very good sleeper.
  • You are a pretty good eater now.  I decided that when you turned two, I would stop worrying about your food intake and just do my best to feed you at normal meal times and that would be it - no more desperately trying constantly all day long to get you to eat a bite of food.  I don't know if my plan worked because you learned to eat when the opportunity was given, or if the problem just self-corrected, but now you'll eat at least something at each meal.  I know I can pretty reliably give you Go-gurt, cheese, white grape juice, pretzels, chicken nuggets, and popsicles (which are really just frozen applesauce mixed with butternut squash or fruit pulp so I let you eat as many of them as you want each day!)
  • You regularly speak in 4 word sentences now!  You can also voice your own thoughts now, instead of just expanding on what we're already talking about.
  • You are such a little monkey and can clamor up onto the couches with no hesitation now!
