Bennett's first big injury

It was one of the worst snow storms of the winter, and I went outside to shovel the driveway.  When I finished, I bundled you up in your coat we had just bought earlier that day and took you and the puppies outside for a quick bathroom break for the pups.  We were on our way back inside via the garage, when you slipped on the floor (you had compacted snow built up on the bottom of your shoes from our walk) and fell headfirst onto an old car battery (we're not careless, I promise - the battery was way to the side of the garage, and you had been making a beeline for the bag of ice salt next to it).  You started screaming immediately.  I ran over and picked you up, and was horrified to see a river of blood running down your face already.  I scooped you up and ran inside and within 10 seconds had gone through half a pack of wet wipes trying to wipe up the blood so I could figure out how bad it was, wondering if I needed to call an ambulance.  I had never seen so much blood in my life! Heavenly Father must have been watching over you, because my first thought was "go get Carly."  Carly was our neighbor who was a nurse, and while it seems like we're never home at the same time, she was outside her front door at that moment shoveling snow.  So when I burst out of our front door with you in my arms, she was right there.  She came inside with us and we got you calmed down with a sucker while she worked on staunching the blood flow.  When she had you cleaned up, I was amazed at how small your wound really was!
Your brand new coat, covered in blood.

Yes, you had a big hole in your head about the size of a dime, but with as much blood as there had been I was convinced you had split your entire skull open.  Since the wound was still actively bleeding after 20 minutes and it was clear the wound needed to be closed, Carly sent us to Instacare.  So I got you bundled into the car (thankfully we had never taken off your coat) and we started the terrifying drive through that horrible blizzard to the Instacare.  OF COURSE this had to happen after dark in a snow storm!  When we walked up to the registration desk, you loudly announced to all the girls behind the desk "I got an owie on my head guys!"

Daddy called while I was checking you in.  I had wanted to call him before but my first priority was getting you to the doctor.  Daddy had just arrived home from work and was alarmed by all the bloody rags all over the counter, and the fact that we were missing even though he had just talked to us an hour before.  I quickly explained what was going on which alarmed him even more, but there was nothing he could do - he just had to wait at home worried while I got you taken care of.

Since you wouldn't let anyone near your head, I had to hold you tight while the doctor put a numbing cream on your wound.  Then we just had to wait for 10 minutes while you went numb.  I could tell when it started to work because you started to be a little cheerful.

They wanted to do stitches but you were kicking and screaming so instead me and a nurse held you down while the doctor pushed your skin back together and did skin glue.  We had to keep your wound dry and covered for 3 weeks.  The daily bandaid changes were awful for all of us, but I was very pleased at how clean your scar looked at the end of the 3 weeks!  I think over the next couple years it'll fade away to almost nothing.
